Incoming Freshmen: Assignment for Summer of 2021
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2025:
Welcome to a new and exciting educational adventure! To help prepare you for the journey, please find below the summer reading requirements.
Please read the instructions carefully. A short review of each book can be found at most online book retailers. The titles were chosen with both student interest and relevance to the World Literature curriculum in mind.
All in-coming 9th grade students are required to read The Hobbit (J. R. R. Tolkien) by the start of school in September.
In addition to The Hobbit, students should read one (1) of the two books listed below.
In other words, students are required to read two (2) books over the summer. All students must read The Hobbit plus one additional book from the two options below.
Students will be tested over the books in early September. Reading Sparknotes and other online study aids instead of the actual books is not a good idea. Students are free to use online resources as a supplement to reading the books.
In addition to The Hobbit, read one (1) of these:
The Boy in Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne
Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-li Jiang
If you read either book in Middle School, you are strongly encouraged to read the other book this summer.
Have a safe, fun, and relaxing summer!
