“Every single one of you has something you’re good at…Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join…the debate team.” -President Barack Obama
People will listen to you.
Debate teaches you how to argue persuasively, understand both sides of an argument, improve your time management, improve your note-taking, and generally build your public speaking and reasoning skills.
Debate teaches you how to speak with confidence. Promotes self-worth and self-esteem.
You will end up knowing more about current events than many of your classmates, and you can learn even more about history, philosophy, argumentation, and public policy.
Colleges often give extra consideration to applicants who have debated in high school because they understand the qualities and skills debate develops.
"I think debating in high school and college is most valuable training whether for politics, law, business, or for service…A good debater must not only study material in support of his own case, but he must also, of course, thoroughly analyze the expected argument of his opponent. The give and take of debating, the testing of ideas, is essential to democracy. I wish we had a good deal more debating in our educational institutions...” -President John F. Kennedy
